2008 Usepensinging x Ashen split EP (released by Psychoyouth Records, Taiwan)
2009 Copycat EP

It was a total confusion when local audience meet this Screamo band Usepensinging, and it took me for a while to understand their music a little bit. They were brave enough to call themselves a screamo band, since for many who consider themselves "punk" did not give a shit about any American screamo bands, for an obvious reason they simply sucks at music but really know about their hairstyle. But no, not this Usepensinging, which influenced by more hardcore-oriented Orchid, Ampere and Japanese Otto Records (with the release of  Envy, with their fanbase both in postrock and hardcore community)and etc. Personally I would understand the bands before mentioned as hardcore screamo, but simply for the understanding instead of creating another label. The Jun-Zai's scream is very much psychotic and frentic, which is one characteristic of hardcore screamo. the arrangement of each instruments is pretty complicated and precise, and the ability to handle variety of tempos is pretty neat-- slow intro, breakdown and then sudden bombard and at the end an abrupt stop. Usepensing releases two EPs, one with death grind monster Ashen. the bassist Norton is the owner of Psychoyouth Records, a distro and a label in this tiny scene, with its effort to introduce both local and international bizzare yet talented bands. Now Usepensinging is in a hiatus, each member has their own project-- Nortion organizes gigs and runs his label, KingKong is the guitarist of We are so Sad, Lu the guitarist of another screamo/postrock band Until Seeing Whale's Eyes, and A-Die is the drummer in Ashen.

I still rember the exciting feeling to go to their performance, often pretty short but always impressive, like they stub your brain with a sharp dagger. Some members are veterans in early emo scene and still stick together after these years. But then it is like they come out in past few years in the underground scene without notice, and then every kids received electric therapy after going to their gigs, then often with HC band Angry Young Men, Ashen...etc. I wanted do a report about this unique and kinda mysterious group and the atmosphere which they create with each performance in the scene, but then it was like I was so busy and later they just told me yeah we broke up and I thought fuck ya and what a lost...

Band Profile: Bazooka

genre:old school thrash
discography:
2009 Toxic Warriors(released by Metal Inquisition Records, German.)

Bazooka started as an old school euro-influenced thrash band and still sticks to this fierce and raw style now. Experiencing lineup change, Bazooka's present lineup is Po-Wei(guitarist), Vic(bassist), Spike(vocal)and Curseomind(drummer). In my opinion, although not as a professional omniscient metalheads, people know Taiwanese metal scene or have their first impression through now world-famous ChthoniC, and it has influenced, both the local audience and band, the taste of How a Taiwanese metal band sounds like. Never is this a big deal to me, though.(even I can talk tons of trashtalk about this bizzare metal scene and how the macho atomsphere make me uncomfortable for hours.)ChthomiC is never part of the scene and it would never intend to, I guess.

On the other hand, Bazooka makew sense to me for the practice of DIY attitude originating from punk culture, from recording to cover design, booking their own shows and support our gigs even we can't afford to pay them much. Members of  Bazooka do have a wild range of taste and know clearly what sound they would like to bring out. Po-Wei is an addict to crust punk and old school metal bands. He is also a gothic and post-punk lovers. Spike has his solo goregrind band "Rampency." Vic is in a brutal death band called "Revilement." their music is simple yet raw, and they bomb you with its great riffs. Personally I think their live performance is of much more fun than their album, for the energy, the incredible speed they play the instruments,  and the chemistry between members.

Those guy are so active in the scene that they organize gigs(Raw Noise Attack series, Liberated Rhythms and Tiger-hunting), play in bands(Bazooka, Revilement, Total Disruption, Rampency), open up the very first crust punk shop in Taiwan, performs with veteran bands such as Abigail from Japan.  In 2009 Bazooka was signed by Metal Inquisition Records and release the first album "Toxic Warriors." They are interviewed by magazines such as Terrorizer, and they receive quite a good review for the album.

Band Profile:Ashen

genre: death/grind/hardcore
discography:
2008-split with Usepensinging
2009-EP "H1N1"

Personally this three brutal monsters called Ashen is my favorate band in Taiwan, with its fuckin' fierce & evil drilling noise. The band started in 2007 as an old-school thrash band influenced by Slayer. Nonetheless, They've evolved, with its loyal audience, into a band with the Napalm Death grind-sound and ability of totalj control of the mathcore techniques. the guitar are fuckin' of devil, and A-si simply plays the bass with full-speed and rawness. They have this great understanding in the change of tempo, yet the band still makes you wanna mosh pit.

After all this years, Ashen has palyed with J-noisecore band Melt Bananna and Breakcore solo project Drumcorps. Ashen is not a band of idiot machismo, but of fun and good humor. They just all DIY by themselves, but still hold quite a standard of their musical quality.

Band Profile: Selfish Sucker

selfish sucker

location:Taipei, Taiwan
band members:
vocal: A-Shen
guitarist: Pei-Gen
bassist: A-Pun
drummer: ET
mypsace:http://www.myspace.com/selfishsucker
genre: UK 82' and Doom-influenced street punk
discography:
2009 Selfish Sucker self-titled EP

Selfish Sucker might be the bright star from this shithole isle called Taiwan. Afterall, there isn't that many kids embrace bands like Doom, Discharge or the Casualties, more often than not, street punks comes into people's mind simply as a shitty fad-icon, despised even by the local scene, if there's any. Influenced by UK 82' street punk bands, Selfish sucker are schoolmates, the vocal A-Shen, the bassist A-Pan and drummer ET, plus its latest guitarist Pei-Gen. their music is raw and fierce, yet with simplicity and directness. in terms of the lyrics, instead of singing nilistiv bullshit about drinking beer or girl-chasing romance, they just told the audience about their wasted youth with a little tinge of political anger and frustration toward dumb social machine.

The live performance is simply fist-in-the-air and stage-diving style. The bassist A-Pan plays the instrument with energy and smoothness, and the drummer ET just keeps creating fast yet stable beat. at present two members are in the military so there is a hiatus of band's activity.

Here are words from the guitarist Pei-Gen:

"Taiwan is a booming isle without its culture, and a country only cares about its look.
It is also a seudo-democracy country full of priviledge.
the original punk spirit is believed only by the few.

and we are very pissed."
